The city\u2019s modern name is an adaption of Cavalla \u2013 the name of the city for many years. This name is likely taken from the Italian word for horse. The Thassians were drawn here by the rich mines for gold and silver in the nearby mountains, and Neapolis was one of several Thassian colonies along the coast.<\/p><p>The city later gained its independence. It became a civitas of the Roman Republic in 168 BC, and the Egnatia passed through, opening the city to more trade.<\/p><p>Kavala \u2013 which was still Neopolis then \u2013\u00a0 became an extremely significant city for the Christian faith. Kavala became part of the Byzantine Empire. During this period, the city acquired a new name \u2013 Christoulpolis \u2013 to reflect its Christian identity. Emperor Justinian, I built the fortress to protect the city. In the 8th and 9th centuries, the city was further fortified to protect against attacks from Bulgaria.<\/p><div class=\"mv-ad-box\" data-slotid=\"content_5_btf\" data-gyg-scraped=\"1761041179194\"><div class=\"mv-rail-frame-250\" data-slotid=\"content_5_btf\"><div class=\"mv-rail-slide-250\" data-slotid=\"content_5_btf\"><div class=\"mv-rail-sticky-250\" data-slotid=\"content_5_btf\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23798 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/unfoldinggreece.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190831_122138-min.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unfoldinggreece.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190831_122138-min.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/unfoldinggreece.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190831_122138-min-800x389.jpg 800w, https:\/\/unfoldinggreece.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190831_122138-min-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/unfoldinggreece.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190831_122138-min-768x374.jpg 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"498\" data-lazy-srcset=\"https:\/\/unfoldinggreece.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190831_122138-min.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/unfoldinggreece.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190831_122138-min-800x389.jpg 800w, https:\/\/unfoldinggreece.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190831_122138-min-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/unfoldinggreece.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190831_122138-min-768x374.jpg 768w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/unfoldinggreece.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190831_122138-min.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><\/figure><p>Ultimately, later in the 9th century, the Bulgarians managed to capture the city anyway, until the Lombards came in the late 12th century. The Catalans also tried to take the city a few years later but were unsuccessful. Kavala was back in Byzantine hands until the Ottomans came, in 1387.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Ottomans destroyed the city \u2013 except for the fortress \u2013 and built it in their own manner, which accounts for the strong Ottoman character of the Old Town. Under the Ottoman Emperor Suleiman the Magnificent, the Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha improved the town\u2019s fortunes, building the aqueduct still standing today.<\/p><p>Mehmet Ali, who eventually ruled Egypt, was born in Kavala in the late 18th century. Grand warehouses and Belle Epoque mansions still stand from this period.<\/p><p>After the city became a part of Modern Greece, it welcomed many refugees from Asia Minor, adding to its labor force and the further growth of the tobacco industry.
